Dr. Custer received his MD degree in 1996 from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio.  He completed his internship and general surgery residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in 2001.

Upon completion of his residency training in 2001, Dr. Custer was very involved in clinical and didactic teaching with residents and students, as well as abroad.  He lectured on bariatrics at the local, regional, and national level, including an obesity workshop through the US Surgical Corporation.  He served as a clinical instructor for both Ethicon and the US Surgical Corporation, and has proctored several other surgeons in laparoscopic gastric bypass techniques.

Prior to working with patients at Barix Clinics of Ohio, Dr. Custer was in general surgery practice at Mount Carmel and currently practices out of Fairfield Medical Center.  He will continue to meet his patients' general surgery needs through Lancaster Surgical Associates. 

Dr. Custer is fully licensed and board certified by the American Board of Surgery.  He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, the Columbus Surgical Society, and American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Custer has also served as a volunteer physician in Central Africa on multiple occasions.
