Risks of Bariatric Surgery and Major Surgery
Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, has been performed for more than thirty years. As a result of the many technical innovations and improvements in surgical techniques, the safety record for bariatric surgery has improved significantly. But despite all of the improvements, it is still considered major surgery and still has both general surgical risks and ones specific to bariatrics. For example, major surgery risks include blood clots or pulmonary embolism, respiratory complications (especially during operations lasting more than two hours), infection, and heart failure. Heart condition may be evaluated prior to surgery, but problems can still occur, even if the patient has passed a cardiac stress test. In addition to the general surgical risks, specific bariatric risks include anesthesia intubation problems, leaks due to perforation of the stomach or connections created as part of the procedure, and bowel obstructions. Nutritional problems after surgery require periodic testing and monitoring. The risks listed above are not all inclusive, and every patient must review these risks personally with the surgeon and anesthesiologist. There is no substitute for experience on the part of the surgical team and capability on the part of the hospital where the surgery is performed.
