Bariatric Surgery Safety Improved with Laparoscopic Procedure

At Barix Clinics, the vast majority of bariatric surgery procedures are done with the minimally invasive procedure called laparoscopic surgery.  A new study found that laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is safer, has lower complication rates and a shorter hospital stay than the open procedure. 

“Obesity has been associated with numerous adverse health conditions, including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic liver disease, increased risk of disability, hypertension, dyslipidemia, some forms of cancers, gallstones, and musculoskeletal disorders,” researchers wrote. “Bariatric surgery has proven to be the most effective and enduring option in treating the morbidly obese.”

This study affirms that the technology of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is safer than open gastric bypass surgery.
